Gobind Singh Foundation, an active Sikh organization in Washington,
arranged a special program to launch a year long celebration to
commemorate the 300 year anniversary guruship of the Guru Granth
Sahib. This will be celebrated world wide in 2008.
This was the
occasison chosen to honor ex-Jathedar Prof. Darshan Singh ji for his
life long commitment and dedication to spreading the word of the
Guru through Gurbani kirtan. Every year Guru Gobind Singh foundation
recognizes individuals or organizations dedicated to serve the Sikh
cause.
Last year this
award was given to Smithsonian And Sikh Heritage Foundation for
creating the Sikh exhibit in Smithsonian museum in Washington, DC
which is now moving to California. Amid a large gathering of
Washington metro Sikhs, Prof Darshan Singh, in his powerful voice ,
sang hymns of gurbani and exhorted the Sikhs to celebrate 300 years
of GuruGadi divas by reading the scriptures and understanding it.
Theme of his kirtan was Shabad (word Guru). He appealed to the
Sikhs to read two pages a day to understand the Guru Granth Sahib in
order to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Sikh
scriptures.
Dr. Rajwant
Singh, Executive Director of GGSF, termed him an “authority on
scriptural understanding”. A siropa was presented to Prof Darshan
Singh by Bhai Gurdarshan Singh, the Granthi of GGSF. A plaque
bearing the inscription of Life Time Service Award was presented to
him by Ranjit Singh, the Chairman of GGSF. Amrit Kaur, the Secretary
of GGSF said Prof Darshan Singh has inspired many with his
analytical explanation to follow the path laid down by the Guru.
