Jindan’s gravestone unveiling in UK
WSN Network
NORFOLK: This
Wednesday, March 12, will see the unveiling of a Victorian headstone
that marked the temporary resting place of Maharani Jindan Kaur. It
will be performed at the Ancient House Museum, Thetford, Norfolk UK.
Popularly known
as Maharani Jindan, she was Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s wife and mother
of the tragic young last Sikh king figure, Maharaja Duleep Singh.
The 2x2 foot
marble stone that had remained untouched beneath catacombs of the
old Kensal Green Dissenters Chapel in northwest London for almost a
century and half was discovered only last year, stunning experts on
the survival of this piece of history, a report in a Chandigarh
based edition of an Indian daily newspaper, said
The newspaper
quoted the Chairman of Friends of the Cemetery, Barry Smith, saying
that the stone was found “under tons of rubble” but did not say who
spoke to him, where was he speaking from and when did he speak to, a
style of reporting typical of small town Indian journalism.
“The stone,
blackened by years of mould, was given to a local restorer to put
the pieces together and clean marble back to gleaming white,” the
report said, but did not quote any attribution.
It also quoted
historian Peter Bance, described as “the translator who translated
the inscription” as saying: “It was amazing that a relic of late
Maharani had been discovered as she was in
England for just
two-and-half years.” The stone was also described as “an exceptional
Sikh artifact”.
