Sikhs disappointed with Congressional defeat
of
hate crimes bill
WSN Network
Washington: The recent defeat of vital hate crime legislation in
Congress has been seen as a set back by many of America's minority
ethnic groups, including the Sikhs. Many human rights groups and
those at the receiving end of the hate crimes had hoped that the US
Congress should have exemplified the courage necessary to ensure
that the world's oldest democracy is seen as respecting the nation’s
diversity.
The disappointment was particularly sharp among the Sikh Americans
who often find themselves the victims of hate crimes without any
support from their local police departments.
Many think the bill, if passed, would have strengthened the ability
of federal, state, and local governments to investigate and
prosecute hate crimes as it would have enabled the Justice
Department to assist in the investigation and prosecution of all
hate crimes.
Many Sikhs had signed a petition in support of sustaining hate crime
protections with the current legislation.
