Club honours touring hockey stalwarts

CITY: Indian Olympian Baljit Singh Saini and Pakistani Olympian
Mohammad Tariq Imran were honoured at a reception hosted at Raja
Sweets amidst a gathering of many community leaders. Resident hockey
players including former Olympian Gurtej Singh Dhaliwal, Asian
hockey veteran Harwinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, national swimming
champion Jasbir Singh Gorkha, national swimming coach Jasjeet Singh
were present at the meet.
Kashmir Singh Dhugga, who has been actively promoting hockey in
California, was also present along with representatives, junior and
senior players of many sports clubs of the region. Community leaders
and gurdwara representatives also joined others present to honour
the leading hockey players. While honouring the duo, the organisers
decided to promote sports among the youth.
Famous wrestlers Tarsem and Kamal, Prof. Dhanoa, President of the
Punjabi Sahit Sabha Bhag Singh Sagar, Raja Sweets Chain chief Makhan
Singh Bains were also present to greet the two players. Among
others, the member of the Supreme Council of the Fremont Gurdwara
and leader of the Sikh Youth of America, Jaswinder Singh Jandi,
famous Sikh leader, Gurtej Singh Dhaliwal, international swimmer and
coach and Sikh Youth of America leader Jasjeet Singh, Asian player
Harwinder Singh Gill, honoured Baljit Singh Saini.
Subsequently, the Pakistani player Tariq Imran was honoured by
former hockey player and leading businessman Kashmir Singh Dhugg,
Satjit Singh Virk and Rajwan Khan.
Speaking on the
occasion, Baljit Singh said that it was a great occasion as a player
from India and Pakistan were honoured jointly at one function. Tariq
Imran thanked the organisers and said that it was a privilege to
enjoy the warmth of people of the two Punjabs in distant lands and
prayed that this association would continue. Prof. Prabhsharandeep
Singh said that players are the true representatives of nations. The
stage was ably conducted by Satnam Singh. He said that while we are
honouring our players, we should afford to remember the events of
1984. Literature relating to events of June 1984 prepared by Sikh
Youth of America was distributed at the function.
