Gurpreet Khaira crowned Miss
Canada Punjaban-2008
Samarpreet Sidhu is First Runner up and Jatinder Sandhu is
second runner up

TORONTO:
Mississauga resident Gurpreet Khaira was crowned Miss World Punjaban
-2008 at a beauty-cum-cultural pageant held at the Rose Theatre
here. In the solo dance round, her performance based on the song,
Bann Morni Bagan de vich naccha by late lyricist Surinder Kaur
enthralled the audience just as it pleased the judges at the show
organized by the Jasmer Singh Dhatt, the chairperson of the
Sabhyachark Sath, Punjab. Gurpreet will represent
Canada
in the International Miss World Punjaban -2008 contest to be held in
Punjab
in December this year.
Samarpreet Sidhu
from Brampton was the first runner up and Jatinder Sandhu from
Surrey
was the second runner up. Gori Sharma won the acclaim of the Best
Folk Dance and Amanpreet Kaur won the honours of the Intelligent
Punjaban. Similarly Harween Dhanjal from Bramption was crowned
Talented Punjaban and Ramandeep Kaur, also from the same city danced
her way to grasp the Queen of Gidhha title. The other participants
included Sandeep Brar from
Edmonton
and Subhpreet from
Mississauga.
Jet Airways
showered the prize of free journey to
India
to participate in the International Miss World Punjab contest on the
Winners.
The participants
showed their prowess in this competition in the fields of Punjabi
songs, folk dance, Punjabi Boli and Giddha. The judges included Dr.
Sukhnain from Ludhiana, Sukhwant Kaur Sidhu from Chandigarh, film
writer Bakhshinder and Giddha expert from
Toronto
–Jagdev Sandhu.
During the
programme, Punjabi singer Rai Jujhar, Pakistani-origin artist Shaima
khan and Randhir Rana entertained the gathering with their singing.
The children from the Gurukul Arts Academy also presented a number
of items which were much appreciated by the audience. Vancouver
based radio host Manjeet Kaur conducted the show.
Canadian member
of Parliament, Gurbaksh Singh Malhi appreciated the format of the
show and congratulated the organizers for their attempt to regain
Punjabi heritage. Member Parliament Ruby Dalla, deplored the trend
of female foeticide and urged the gathering to celebrate Lohri on
the birth of a daughter. The member of the City Provincial council
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar assured full support from the council for such
community programmes.
The Miss
Punjaban Australia 2008 would be held in Sydney on 28 September and
the finals would be held in Ludhiana on 20 December. The patron of
the Punjabi Sath, Dr. Gurbhajan Gill congratulated the young females
who participated in the function and said that they had done their
families and community proud.
